Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 32.0 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny early then sunny later with a high temperature in the middle 40’s, dropping to the middle 20’s tonight. It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow, with a high in the middle to upper 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be warm. Expect highs in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s. No rain is predicted this week.
Little River is flowing at 202 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.02 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 268 cfs. The water temperature is 44.8 degrees this morning.
Other streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal or slightly below normal. Water temperatures are chilly, but we will see some warming beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.
If you go fishing today in the mountains, fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymph rigs will likely work best for you.
Water temperatures in the lowland rivers are too cool for much smallmouth bass activity. You may do well fishing for trout where they are stocked. Go later today after the water warms. Try nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms and possibly mop flies to catch the stocked trout.
If you hope to wade fish on a tailwater today, there are some options. TVA plans to cut the flows at some dams later today. If you are boating, there are even more options. Check the TVA website from the links below to see the generation schedules planned at the dams.
The brand new and very popular Firehole 520 curved shank jig hook is now back in stock at the shop in all sizes except #8 and those will be arriving hopefully later this week. The 520 is made using heavy wire in a full range of sizes down to #20. You can see this hook on our online store by CLICKING HERE. This is the only curved shank jig hook I have seen.
The 520 became available to dealers and fly tyers about three weeks ago. Evidently, a lot of people, including me, were anticipating the release. We saw the samples a month or so earlier. The day I saw them on the Firehole dealer site, I ordered a few of each size with a normal Firehole order. They arrived on a Saturday. Will and I photographed them that day and loaded the page onto our online store. By Tuesday morning, we were sold out of some sizes. We scrambled to get more and did. We ordered more again, and this time, a lot more. Two days later, we ordered even more which will arrive in a few days.
When the next order arrives, we will maintaining a stock of up to 20 to 30 packs of some sizes and less of others. Those numbers will be adjusted as needed and we may re-order weekly. What happened is, we acted quickly and got them online, where they showed up in internet searches with free shipping. People around the US found them and ordered. They were waiting too.
I don’t remember something like this happening before at our shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
