Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 50.0 degrees.
Christmas Day was very warm and windy. The high temperature recorded at the Knoxville Airport was 69 degrees. Normal for the date is 49 degrees. The low temperature was 60 degrees. Normal is 32 degrees.
The wind will be calm today and the warm air will remain for several days. It will be sunny with a high temperature in the middle to upper 60’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. Tomorrow and Tuesday will be very warm, with highs in the low 70’s and lows around 60 degrees. We have a chance for rain most days through new years day, with a high chance Wednesday and Thursday. We may get between 1 and 3 inches of rain this week.
Little River is flowing at 149 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is an amazing 50 degrees this morning.
All streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing below normal with some flowing quite a bit below normal. Water temperatures are very warm and they will warm further as the week progresses.
When the water reaches 50 degrees, trout become active. Fishing for trout in the mountains and lowland rivers will be good though there is a chance for high water later this week. Nymphs will work for sure. There may also be aquatic insect adults on the water so be prepared with dry flies. Blue wing olives will likely be present, as well as other insect adults but hatches, if they occur, will be sporadic.
Stealth and fly presentation are essential to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more. Dress in muted colors to blend with the forest. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Most lowland rivers are flowing fairly low. Smallmouth bass fishing will improve this week. Nymphs and streamers are good fly choices. Try crayfish patterns. Stocked trout will be active too. Nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms and mop flies are good choices.
Tailwater anglers have some wade or boat fishing opportunities available today. Check the predicted flows at Clinch and South Holston dams. There may be others. Power demand will be low this week, so there could be many tailwater fishing options through the end of the year.
I believe fishing will be good this week, mostly because the streams and rivers will be warmer. The last week of the year will feel like Spring. Spring fishing is not that far off. The days are getting longer. Some years, Spring fishing has started in February.
We will be open today from 9 am until 5 pm. We should be busy this week. I know for a fact, many of our customers have gift cards burning a hole in their pocket. That, along with much better fishing conditions will bring people out of their home, at least in our area. Our shipping department will likely be busy this week. Gift cards work for mail orders, whether you are buying online or calling us to order.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
