Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 31.3 degrees.
Rain and snow are likely today, tonight and tomorrow morning. Today’s high temperature is predicted to be in the upper 30’s with a low tonight in the low teens. I read several weather forecasts this morning. None agree exactly how much snow we will get in the valley tonight. What they do agree on is, heavy snow will fall in the mountains, up to 8 inches or more. The mountains are under a Winter storm warning.
It will be extremely cold tomorrow and through the night, with a high in the upper 20’s and a low in the teens again. Sunday will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 199 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.01 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 306 cfs. The water temperature is 37.9 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing below normal and very cold. And, the water will be colder after tonight. Fishing for trout is slow. Though the precipitation will begin today as rain in the valley, it will likely be snow in the higher elevations. This is not a good day to be fishing in the Smokies.
Fishing will not be much better in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains. Even stocked trout will probably be lethargic as water temperatures fall.
There are not many tailwater trout fishing opportunities today. TVA and the Corps will be generating a most dams all day. There will be a long break in the generation at South Holston Dam due to work being done on the weir dam. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you have some other tailwater fishing options.
Yesterday morning at about 5:30 am, Paula got a text from one of our local friends. The Townsend Shopping Center caught fire the night before at about 10 pm. A photo sent with the text to Paula showed the building engulfed in flames.
I left home to drive to work yesterday morning at about 7 am. I drove to the Townsend Shopping Center and pulled into the parking lot. Fire fighters had left. I was the only person there. I saw fire at each end of the building. Another SUV pulled in. It was Gene Webb and his wife. She told me Gene was calling the fire department to let them know the fire had re-ignited.
I drove to work but on the way home later, I saw Jean and Jerry Sullivan, the owners. I stopped for a few minutes and we talked. That was a very sad conversation. I feel terrible for them. I offered to help in any way.
The Townsend Shopping Center opened on Little River in the 1930’s by Jerry’s grandfather, first as a tea room, before becoming a grocery and hardware store. It was one of if not the oldest ongoing business in town. Jerry is a Case knife expert, with a long history with the Case company.
I bought three Case knives from Jerry in December, to give as Christmas presents. I usually stopped in once a week to buy gasoline or other things and talk to Jean, Jerry and Tammy.
I hope they re-build and re-open. I bet they do.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
