Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 35.1 degrees.
Most roads in the Park have re-opened, including Little River Road between Elkmont and the Townsend “Y” and Newfound Gap Road.
Rain will move into the area today. The high temperature will be in the middle to upper 50’s, falling to the middle 40’s tonight as the rain continues. We can expect a warm day tomorrow with heavy rain possible and continuing through tomorrow night. We are under a flood watch overnight tonight through Thursday night.
Little River is flowing at 162 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 315 cfs. The water temperature is 38.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing low this morning. That will not be the case by Friday. Water temperatures have warmed slightly since yesterday, but the water is still cold. Warm rain will raise the water temperatures temporarily this week. Cold nights will return Friday and through the weekend and we will see water temperatures fall.
This is probably not a good day to go fishing in the Smokies, but if you do, plan on using weighted nymph rigs.
It is possible you could catch stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains later today. That is something you could at least try. Use nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms or mop flies.
Don’t expect good fishing but at least you will be fishing.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams today with only short breaks. Tailwater fishing options are limited. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
I guess we will have to wait and see what happens with this heavy rain that is predicted. I read one weather forecast this morning, that indicated the heaviest rain will be to our west and along the I-75 corridor.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
