Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 25.5 degrees.
The next few days will be sunny with normal temperatures for February. Today’s high temperature will be in the upper 40’s with a low tonight in the low 30’s. Tomorrow through Saturday will be warmer, with highs in the middle to upper 50’s and lows in the low 30’s. Sunday will be colder with a chance for rain or snow.
Most roads in the Smokies that were closed due to snow and ice have re-opened, including Newfound Gap Road. Little River Road was closed late yesterday afternoon from the Townsend "Y" to Elkmont, due to a rock slide. Hopefully the road will be opened soon.
Little River is flowing at 573 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.83 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 338 cfs. The water temperature is 41.9 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal with some flowing close to normal. The streams will recede through the week. Water temperatures are chilly at all elevations. We should see slight warming of the streams this week due to the bright sun and fairly warm days.
Fishing will not be good, but trout might be caught, especially later this week. Weighted nymph rigs will likely work best for you.
We may experience better fishing in the lowland rivers where trout are stocked if the streams warm over the next few days. Nymphs, egg flies, squirmy worms or mop flies are good fly choices.
You might be able to squeeze in some fishing time on a few tailwaters today. TVA and the Corps will be generating at every dam but there are some fairly long generation breaks at a few. Check the TVA website to see what options you may have.
We are having a busy first week of February at the shop, especially compared to the same period last year. “Cabin Fever” has set in. People want to get out and they are. Our business is weather dependent. Our sport is weather dependent.
The weather during the first week of February last year was not good. It was cold and roads in the Smokies were closed due to snow and ice. Water temperatures were in the 30’s most of the week last year. This is not a fair comparison but it sure is nice seeing more customers in the store than we normally see in early February.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy warmer days and nights by the third week of this month. Fly Fishing Spring probably won’t arrive by February 21st, but we should be trending that way.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
