Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 24.3 degrees.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature around 50 degrees, dropping to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny again and warmer with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the low to middle 30’s. It will continue to be warmer through the end of the week, with highs in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.
Little River Road between Elkmont and Townsend re-opened yesterday morning after a rock slide was cleared.
Little River is flowing at 513 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 307 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies have receded to near normal for this date, with some flowing higher than normal. The streams are swift so be careful wading. Water temperatures are cold.
Fishing will be slow in the mountains today. The streams will warm somewhat as the week progresses, and there will be some fishing improvement, depending on how warm the waters become. Weighted nymph rigs will work best for you.
Lowland river fishing will be slow this week for smallmouth bass. Stocked trout in these rivers may be more active by the end of the week and hopefully sooner. Try nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns and mop flies.
There will be long periods of generation at many dams in the region today. There are breaks in the generation schedules at a handful of dams, including Wilbur, South Holston and Chatuge. You may be able to work with some schedules today, so check the TVA website from the links below to see where tailwater fishing is possible for wading or boating.
We finished a very busy first week of February at the shop. Fly fishing anglers are preparing for Spring. It looks like temperatures will be about normal through February 22nd. For now, I don’t see Spring fishing beginning here before that date unless the weather pattern changes. It probably won’t happen.
Fly Fishing Spring starts in the mountains when the water temperatures reach a sustained number of near 50 degrees. That can occur in late February or March. It begins in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fly tyers are actively filling their boxes. I don’t remember a better week in the fly tying department than we had last week. Will and I will be placing our weekly fly tying orders today and tomorrow. I am constantly raising the inventory amounts on the best selling items. We have a great inventory system, that creates automatic orders. But, I have to tell the system I want to stock more of items that are trending up. Those decisions are made by looking at the item sales reports and I do that often. I will do that early today so orders this week will reflect the changes.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
