Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:04 am, the temperature is 26.6 degrees.
It will be sunny and warmer today with a high temperature in the upper 50’s, dropping to the low to middle 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 50’s and a low in the 30’s. Friday will be much warmer. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 60’s with a low in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 431 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.47 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 290 cfs. The water temperature is 41.0 degrees.
The streams are not warming at all. Temperatures at night have been colder than predicted. Hopefully we will see some warming by later this week. Streams are flowing near normal with some flowing slightly higher than normal. You will find swift water is some areas. Little River is flowing on the high side of good.
Fishing may improve by Friday. It may not be good, but conditions should be better. If you go, plan on using weighted nymph rigs.
Trout and smallmouth bass will be sluggish until the lowland rivers warm further. We should see some improvement in the water temperatures later this week, offering us better fishing for stocked trout.
Yesterday, Dennis gave me a copy of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) stocking schedule for 2022. The first stocking date for Little River this year is listed as February 27th. He and I agree, this seems to be earlier than normal. You can see the schedule by CLICKING HERE. The schedule does not include tailwaters.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating at most dams with short breaks today. There are a few exceptions, including Cherokee and South Holston Dams where there are longer breaks scheduled. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the generation at your favorite tailwater.
We are hoping for normal rainfall, not too much and not too little. We are hoping for normal flows on the tailwaters this Spring with many fishing opportunities.
Since December 1st, rainfall at the Knoxville Airport is very close to normal. Last year at this time, rainfall was 7.11 inches above normal for the period. So far, we have a good start for better tailwater fishing this Spring.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
