Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 43.2 degrees.
It will be breezy today with clouds moving in. The high temperature will be in the low to middle 60’s with a low tonight in the low 50’s.
There is a low chance for rain early tomorrow, with a high chance later in the day. It may be windy, especially in the mountains through Thursday night.
Rain and thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow night. Rain may be heavy at times. Severe storms are possible. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 60’s to low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge near Townsend. Median flow for this date is 245 cfs. The water temperature is 41.2 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are warming and that trend will continue at least through tomorrow night. Right now, most streams are flowing near or below normal. Fishing will improve some as the water warms. Rivers and streams may rise and become stained late tomorrow through Friday.
Fishing will probably not be good through tomorrow, but your chances for catching trout will be better as the streams warm. Weighted nymph rigs will work best. Fish in the low elevations.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout will become a little better as the rivers warm. Try nymphs, egg patterns, mop flies or squirmy worms.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many dams in the region. There are long pauses planned at a few. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater angling options you have.
We are waiting for warmer water, active trout and aquatic insect hatches. The long-term weather forecast changes every day but I keep looking for the onset of Spring fly fishing in the Smokies and lowland rivers.
Monday through Wednesday of next week will be very warm, day and night unless the forecast changes.
Then, it will be colder at night later next week but fairly warm during the days through March 2nd.
Of course, this is subject to change.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
