Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 31.1 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 50’s and a low tonight in the low to middle 30’s. Sunshine is predicted every day this week with no rain. Each day will be warmer than the day before, and high temperatures should reach the 70’s by the weekend. Nights will be warm, in the 40’s until the weekend when they are predicted to warm to the 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 1,270 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.63 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 354 cfs. The water temperature is 45.0 degrees this morning.
Rainfall night before last raised the water levels in most streams in the Smokies yesterday morning, though not significantly. Water levels are falling slowly now. Still, most streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, stand in safe water casting heavily weighted nymph rigs.
As the week progresses, streams will recede slowly and warm. Hopefully the water levels will be at the desired level most anglers prefer by the weekend. The ground is saturated so the rivers will not fall quickly. Fishing will improve each day. With Spring-like temperatures predicted later this week, we are hoping for good or at least fair fishing conditions by the weekend. We may see heightened aquatic insect activity.
Trout stocking by TWRA in the lowland rivers has begun. Towns that have their own trout hatcheries are stocking trout. We can expect to see many anglers fishing in the stocked rivers flowing out of the mountains this weekend. Trout will be more active. Fishing will be good if the water temperature reaches 50 degrees or warmer.
TVA will be generating at most dams today with only short breaks. There are exceptions so check the TVA website to see if you can work with their schedule at your favorite tailwater.
Tomorrow is March 1st. Spring officially begins March 20th. Angler anticipation is high. We were very busy at the shop yesterday. This has been a very busy month, compared to February in prior years. Spring break starts now in some states. Fly fishing anglers are preparing.
Bugs will be hatching. Trout will be slurping them from the surface. Fishing will be good soon.
Don’t be too surprised if Winter weather returns at some point later in March. It could happen. It has before. Maybe it won’t.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
