Our website went down sometime last night. The issue is at our remote server data center. The problem should be corrected later this morning. I am writing this report and should be able to load it on the server soon.
Our site is up and running again at 5:48 am. I have been gathering data and writing the fishing report you can read below. Now I should be able to load it on the remote server.
Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 32.2 degrees.
It is colder overnight than was predicted yesterday. It should be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. Each day this week will be warmer than the day before, with highs in the 70’s and lows in the 40’s. There is no rain predicted in the forecast except for a slight chance Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 745 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 348 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are receding. I think many will be fishable this week. Some may be fishable now. Be careful wading. The water is swift. We consider a gauge reading of 2.5 feet to be on the high side of good at the Little River Townsend gauge. We are not far from that number now but the water levels are falling slowly.
Water temperatures are chilly but there is a slow warming trend occurring. The streams should warm quicker as the week progresses. What we are hoping for is an early morning water temperature close to 50 degrees, warming to more than 50 degrees during the day. When that happens, fishing will be good. Only time will tell if that will happen this week. I have a feeling it will but I’ve been wrong about this before.
I know many of you are trying to plan a fishing trip to the Southern Appalachians. I try to be careful about predicting good fishing conditions when I can’t be sure. I do not want to disappoint anyone.
If you go fishing today, fish the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you at this point in the week. That may change later this week.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout is improving. As water temperatures rise trout will become more active. As water levels fall, you will be able to fish more rivers and in more spots in the rivers. Nymphs, squirmy worms, egg flies and mop flies are good choices.
TVA and the Corps plan to generate full bore all day at many dams today. I saw a couple of exceptions and there may be more. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
It feels like Spring, at least during the day. It looks like Spring. I saw my first robin of the year yesterday morning, greeting me at the shop. Trees are blooming in the valley. This is going to be a beautiful week in the Smokies.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
