Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 29.3 degrees.
About a third of an inch of rain fell overnight.
It was warm last night, 50 degrees at midnight. At about 3 am, the rain changed to light snow which is falling right now. There is no snow accumulation on our concrete driveways here at home. The concrete is too warm. The snow is sticking to the trees.
Snow showers will continue through the morning. It will be windy and cold today. Frigid air will move into the region tonight, with a low temperature around 10 degrees. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 911 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.17 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. The water temperature is 48.6 degrees and falling quickly.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are rising and water temperatures are falling.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park were closed late yesterday in anticipation of the predicted snow. Those roads include Newfound Gap Road, Little River Road, Laurel Creek Road and Cherokee Orchard Road.
This is not a good day to be fishing in the Smokies due to closed roads, rising water and plunging water temperatures.
Lowland river fishing for stocked trout could be somewhat slow today, due to falling water temperatures.
I don’t see many tailwater fishing options today. You might look at the generation schedules at Wilbur and South Holston Dams and see what you think. There may be a pause at Chatuge Dam this afternoon. TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day.
Our brief Spring ended abruptly. Better weather conditions will return next week. We hope for warm days and nights and we will enjoy that again soon. Fishing will improve.
Daylight savings time begins at midnight. Spring forward tonight.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
