Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 27.2 degrees.
Spring is a week away and this week it will begin to feel like the coming season again. It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 60’s falling to the upper 30’s tonight. It will be warmer every day this week through Friday, with highs climbing to the low 70’s and lows in the 40’s by Thursday. Rain will also return to the region this week.
Little River is flowing at 605 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.77 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 324 cfs. The water temperature is 41.5 degrees.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal but many are fishable. You will find swift water in areas of streams. The problem right now is the water temperature. The streams are cold at all elevations. Temperatures will slowly rise over the next few days. Fishing will improve by the end of the week and hopefully before.
I think heavily weighted nymph rigs will work best now, but fishing will be slow until the streams warm into the higher 40’s or warmer.
Lowland rivers that flow out of the mountains are cold. Fishing will improve for stocked trout as the rivers warm.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers continue to churn water through the turbines at most dams offering few choices for tailwater anglers today. I did see a planned pause today at Cherokee Dam. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see if you can find a generation schedule you can work with.
We have not seen a bear at our home this year, yet. Bears have been spotted at homes nearby. We still have four bird feeders out during the day and bring them in at night. The longer we do that, the higher the risk of them being destroyed. Bird feeding season will end at our house soon.
We are seeing a lot of wild turkeys, every day, several times a day. The hens have grouped, accompanied by an older and larger gobbler. The gobblers are puffing up, fanning and strutting, hoping to mate. The hens don’t seem to be interested right now.
Men and women NCAA basketball teams have been selected for the National Tournaments. March madness has begun. This is an exciting time that I have been looking forward to.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
