Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 36.9 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today but warmer, with a high temperature in the middle 60’s, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. Tomorrow should be cloudy early, then becoming sunny and breezy. The high temperature is predicted to be in the upper 70’s, falling to the middle 50’s at night. Rain will move in Wednesday night and continue through early Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 283 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.14 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees this morning.
Streams will be warming over the next few days and fishing will improve in the mountains. Though the streams have been chilly, some anglers are reporting fair to good fishing in the low elevations where the water is warmer. I talked to one local regular customer yesterday, who caught trout on dry flies, late in the day. He was fishing in a low elevation stream.
Fishing will probably be best later today. Fish in the low elevations. Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies and wet flies may produce as well so be prepared for anything.
Fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains will be good today and through the week.
Travis, who manages the trout stocking program and hatchery for the City of Gatlinburg was in the shop yesterday. He has been stocking some huge trout in the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River.
He told me yesterday, anglers should consider using bead head midges. They are working well. Travis is also a professional guide. He knows what works.
One customer left the shop, heading for Gatlinburg. He returned late in the day and said he caught some really nice trout, on Squirmy Wormies. I think he said he caught an 18” and a 20” rainbow, his two largest trout.
I believe it is safe to say that fishing will be much improved today and through the week. Fishing will get better as the streams warm further.
There are pauses in the generation schedules planned today at some dams. Tailwater anglers have choices today, though travel or careful planning might be required. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are. If you have a guide booked today, they will know where and when to begin your float. They can provide you with a good day of fishing.
We are busy at the shop. I talked to several fly fishing visitors yesterday, including Eddie. It is always good to see Eddie. When he and Eric show up, we know fly fishing Spring has begun.
The wild turkeys at our house are definitely mating.
We have not seen a bear all year, though our neighbors have. Our bird feeders are still out during the daylight hours. I expect them to be destroyed any day. After that, the bird feeding will be over until cold weather returns.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
