Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 42.1 degrees.
It will be sunny, warm and very dry today. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low to middle 60’s with a low tonight in the upper 30’s. Humidity will be low. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the upper 40’s. Rain with possible thunderstorms will move in Tuesday, lasting through the day and night.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.98 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 363 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing low, with some flowing quite a bit lower than normal. Water temperatures are good in the lower elevations.
Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Stealth is very important to your success, especially when the stream flows are low. Dress to blend with the forest. Trout can be caught on nymphs for sure. Dry flies and wet flies may work too.
Fly fishing for stocked trout in the lowland rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. Nymphs, small streamers and other sub-surface flies will work best.
There are scheduled long breaks in the generation at several dams today. Tailwater anglers have choices. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see where and when you can find angler friendly flows.
It has been dry so lake levels are much closer to the desired elevations at this point in the year. TVA and the Corps are generating less. Tailwater fishing conditions have improved and we are all glad.
Having said that, we are also looking forward to the expected rain this week. We have the potential for heavy rain Tuesday. There is also a chance for rain Friday, day and night. And, the rain could change to snow overnight. That should not be a problem in the valley. We may see snow accumulation in the higher elevations. Of course this is all subject to change.
Signs of Spring are on display in the foothills of the Smokies. Redbud and dogwood tree blooms are appearing at our house. I just noticed both yesterday.
Of course, the wild turkeys are mating. Turkey hunting season opened yesterday. I was off and at home, and heard no shots.
Almost instantly, males in the large group of goldfinches that visit our bird feeders have turned to a beautiful shade of bright yellow. Mourning doves are traveling in pairs, not larger groups. Robins are hopping on the ground.
What we have not seen at our house this Spring are black bears, during the day. They are probably out there at night, roaming around looking for food. Neighbors have seen them, but we have not. Dennis caught one on his trail camera, destroying one of his bird feeders a few nights ago. Soon we will see mother bears with cubs and males traveling alone during the day. You might see them when you are fishing in the Smokies.
We will be open today from 9 am until 5 pm, as usual on Sundays.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
