Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 45.5 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 70’s and a low tonight in the middle 50’s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and warmer. The high will be in the low 80’s with a low around 60’s degrees tomorrow night. There is a low chance for thunderstorm tomorrow night, and a high chance for showers Sunday and Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 196 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.98 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 251 cfs. The water temperature is 55.2 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing below normal. Water temperatures are good. Fishing for trout in the mountains is good.
Trout are searching for food. Any reasonable dry fly or nymph patterns will work for you. I would feel confident using a Parachute Adams, Elk Hair Caddis, Light Cahill or small yellow Stimulator dry fly. Pheasant Tail, Hare’s Ear, Prince or Tellico nymphs are good choices.
More important than fly pattern choices are stealth and presentation. Stay hidden from the trout by wearing muted clothing that blends with the forest. If your fly is moving at the same rate of speed as the current it is in, you will catch more trout, so, get a good drift as often as possible.
Fishing for stocked trout is good, thanks to the warm water temperatures. Nymphs and small streamers are good fly choices. You might also try drifting midge pupa below a strike indicator to entice picky trout.
Smallmouth bass and other lowland river species will be more active as the rivers warm further this weekend. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best, though you may want to try foam floating flies or poppers to see if the fish are interested.
I think streamers and swimming nymphs will work best on the lakes. I have always found better top water action in May and through the Summer, when the water is warmer. But, that depends on where you live and what lake you are fishing.
Check the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today. I did, and there are long pauses in the generation planned at several dams.
You have many fly fishing choices today. Fishing conditions are very good in the Smokies, lowland rivers and tailwaters. The weekend will be warm and comfortable.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
