Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 64.6 degrees.
It will be cooler today, with a high temperature in the middle 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and tonight. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the middle to upper 70’s. Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 80’s. There is a low chance for thunderstorms Sunday afternoon.
Little River is flowing at 287 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.24 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 169 cfs. The water temperature is 63.3 degrees this morning.
Though still flowing higher than normal, streams in the mountains are at a very good fishing level. Trout are actively taking dry flies and nymphs. A yellow sally stonefly imitation is recommended for your dry fly. Small bead head nymphs will work as a dropper off your dry fly, fished alone, or on a weighted tandem nymph rig. A Green Weenie is a smart choice for your sub-surface fly. Trout are seeing and eating inchworms, which the Green Weenie mimics.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. Small streamers, nymphs, squirmy worms and midge pupa are good fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and panfish in the lowland rivers is also good. The rivers are flowing at excellent levels now. Conditions are ideal for wading, canoeing and kayaking. Streamers, nymphs, crayfish patterns, poppers and foam floating flies are all good choices.
Fishing is also good on the lakes. It will be a little breezy today and there is a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon. I would launch early, at daybreak and fish the banks with streamers, swimming nymphs, foam floating flies or poppers. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. If you wait to fish late, you may get caught in a thunderstorm.
You have many tailwater fishing options today. TVA and the Corps are offering periods of no generation with intermittent pulsing at most dams. One exception is Douglas dam. TVA is still spilling and generating all day there. Check the TVA website from the links below a see what you have to work with.
Fishing is good. You have many options.
A mother bear and her two cubs were hanging around our house last evening. Paula took a couple of pictures of the bears, then ran them off. She uses a copper pan and a wooden spoon to make noise. We like living with bears, but we don’t want them sniffing around the house and hanging out. We prefer they just pass through and go somewhere else.
Door handles on later model cars and trucks are easy for bears to use. They can hook one claw in the handle and pull. If the vehicle is not locked, you can have a bear in your car. A bear can do a lot of damage to the interior of your vehicle. We keep ours locked. Other who don’t wish they had.
