Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:56 am, the temperature is 73.8 degrees.
It is breezy this morning. I can also hear distant thunder.
Showers and scattered thunderstorms are likely today. Some storms may contain strong winds, small hail and heavy rain. The high temperature will be in the low 80’s. We can expect tomorrow and through tomorrow night to be more of the same but a little warmer. The National Weather Service indicates the primary threat for strong storms is confined to near and along the Cumpberland Plateau, so we may be fine here.
Little River is flowing at 184 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.94 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 160 cfs. The water temperature is 64.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing at perfect fishing levels right now. Customers are reporting very good fishing for trout in the mountain streams using dry flies and nymphs. Yellow sally stonefly and beetle imitations will work well for your dry fly. I would definitely drop a Green Weenie off of any dry fly.
I don’t know what to expect out of the predicted rain and possible thunderstorms today through tomorrow night. Streams may rise and become stained. I guess we will have to wait and see what happens. It may miss us.
Fishing has been good for stocked trout in the streams flowing out of the mountains. That may change today, or maybe it won’t. If you go, use nymphs, squirmy worms, small streamers and midge pupa.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish has been very good in the lowland rivers. Nymphs, crayfish patterns, streamers, poppers and foam floating flies will are working well. These rivers flowing through rural populated areas and farms are prone to staining from rain events like we may see today and tomorrow.
Lake fishing is good. Bass and panfish are taking streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies. Depending on how this predicted weather plays out, fishing on a lake may not be a good idea until Thursday. I hate being caught on a lake in a thunderstorm. I can’t remember how many times that has happened to me but some have been vividly memorable.
There are angler friendly flows scheduled at many tailwaters today. You can work with many of these generation schedules with careful planning. Reports from tailwater anglers have been good for trout in the cold water sections and for smallmouth bass on some rivers.
If you go fishing today, don’t forget to take your rain gear.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
