Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 68.5 degrees.
It will be cloudy early today and clearing later with a high temperature in the low 80’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 80’s. We will enjoy a nice weekend coming up. It will be sunny both days but there is a slight chance for showers Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 193 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 149 cfs. The water temperature is 65.5 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal. Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek are rising. Tellico River was rising earlier but has now peaked. Little River and Little Pigeon River are not rising and flowing at good fishing levels.
Fishing in the Smokies is very good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. I would start with a yellow sally dry fly with a Green Weenie dropper. Terrestrials are an abundant food source now. Beetle and ant patterns are good choices. A good tactic is to use the beetle as your dry fly and strike indicator. Trail the ant behind. Ants are hard to see. Watch the beetle. If a trout takes the ant, you will know it.
You should do well today fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains. Nymphs, squirmy worms, small midge pupa, weenies and small streamers will work for you.
Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good in the lowland rivers. Some of these rivers were rising overnight and I suppose there is a chance for stained water. Little River and Little Pigeon River should be fine. Foam floating flies would be my first choice. Hard bodied poppers, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns are good fly choices too.
This is going to be a good lake fishing day though it may be a little breezy at times. Winds are predicted to be out of the northwest a 5 to 10 miles per hour. It is supposed to be cloudy through mid-morning. That is a great condition for fishing on the lakes. I would launch early and fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. When the sun pops out of the clouds, look for shaded banks to fish.
The tailwaters have been fishing well. There are short to long pauses planned in the generation at most dams today. You can work with many of these schedules with careful planning, whether you are wading or boating. If you are floating with a guide, she or he will do the planning for you. Just show up and go.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
