Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 54.9 degrees.
Cooler air has moved into the Smokies. We are in for a beautiful weekend. Yesterday was a perfect fishing day. The sky was mostly overcast, humidity was low and the temperature was comfortable.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s. We do have a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow, with a high in the low 80’s again. It will be sunny Sunday and warmer, with a high in the upper 80’s.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 158 cfs. The water temperature is 64.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are all flowing higher than normal but a very good fishing levels. Fishing for trout is good and that will continue today and through the weekend as there are no heavy rain events predicted.
Dry flies and nymphs are catching trout. An effective tactic is using a dry fly for your primary, and dropping a nymph off the dry. A yellow sally stonefly imitation is a good choice for your dry fly. A black foam beetle is another. Try a small bead head nymph or a Green Weenie for your dropper. Green Weenies are working very well.
Fishing for stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains is good. There are more swimmers and tubers in the water, which is normal in June. Sub-surface flies will work best. Nymphs, squirmy worms, weenies, midge pupa and small streamers are good fly choices.
Fishing conditions are awesome in the lowland rivers. You will catch smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish. Top water flies are my first choice in June and through the Summer. They include poppers and foam floating terrestrial type patterns. Sometimes, sub-surface flies work better. Try streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns. You should do well today and this weekend fishing in these rivers.
This will be a great lake fishing day. Winds will be light. It will be sunny so I would launch at daybreak and fish until I can’t find shaded banks. Game fish and panfish will take streamers, swimming nymphs, poppers and foam floating flies.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating most of the day at Center Hill and Douglas Dams. There will be breaks in the generation at most other dams that tailwater wading anglers can work with. If you are boating, you will have more options.
This looks to be a very good fishing day and you can count on the same this weekend too.
Paula and Donna have been enjoying the week at Sea Pines in Hilton Head, South Carolina. They will be home later today. I have been tending the garden in the evenings for a week. I drive the Gator to the garden, water if necessary and sit there enjoying the Great Smoky Mountains views.
A critter, probably a ground hog or rabbit, ate almost a whole squash plant and chewed on another one night before last or yesterday. Paula will likely build a fence around that area when she returns. She also has some anti rabbit and woodchuck sprays, so she may try that first.
We see rabbits in the field at times, then they are gone for a while, weeks or months. Then they return. Red-tailed hawks and bobcats must thin the population for a time, then move on somewhere else for food. When the cats and hawks return, the rabbits disappear. The same is true with squirrels. I have watched, on two occasions, a bobcat catch and kill a squirrel. Paula saw a hawk swoop in and catch a squirrel once.
I bet that was something to see.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
