Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 58.6 degrees.
It will be sunny and hot today with a high temperature in the low 90’s. The heat wave will continue through the weekend with highs in the low 90’s each day. There is a chance for thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday.
It should be cooler early next week, before becoming hot again later in the week and lasting through July 6th.
Little River is flowing at 81.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.52 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 134 cfs. The water temperature at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend is 66.7 degrees. The water temperature yesterday rose to slightly over 70 degrees at the site.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing below normal. Telliico River is flowing right at normal this morning. The streams are warm in the low elevations and that trend will continue through the weekend. Catching and releasing a trout in warm water can be lethal to the fish. Do the trout a favor and fish the higher elevations this week where the water is cooler.
Dry flies and nymphs will work. In these low water conditions, stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Fish the broken water in riffles, runs and plunge pools where the trout are hiding.
Fishing for bass and panfish in the lower reaches of the rivers flowing out of the mountains is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns are all good fly choices. Fishing will be best early or late.
Fly fishing on the lakes is probably fair to good, when the sun is off the water. Winds will be light early today before becoming northwest from 5 to 10 miles per hour this afternoon. I would go early and launch our boat at daybreak. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, swimming nymphs and streamers. As the sun rises, move to shaded banks to fish.
Have plenty of water in your cooler and stay hydrated. I would go home when it gets hot and miserable.
There are generation schedules offering tailwater fishing opportunities today you can work with. Check the TVA website generation schedules and plan accordingly.
I drove to Maryville yesterday and bought materials to add more display space in the fly tying department. What I am doing is covering the two windows and the space below with pegboard. The small project will provide a net gain of 36 new square feet of usable display space I didn’t have before. I don’t know exactly when I will have time to do this, but the materials will be in my woodworking shop at home and ready to go when I am.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
