Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:43 am, the temperature is 68.0 degrees.
We will see mixed clouds and sun today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s and a fairly good chance for thunderstorms. Tomorrow will be more of the same with a lower chance for thunderstorms. I am looking forward to Monday. The high temperature will be in the upper 70’s. The chance for rain, according to one weather website is 80%.
Scattered thunderstorms did move across the area yesterday evening. We got .11 inches of rain at our house.
Little River is flowing at 89.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.56 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 128 cfs. The river is slowly rising right now. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning.
Many streams in the mountains are flowing below normal. Oconalfutee River is, but the river is rising. Cataloochee Creek rose quickly late yesterday, but it is receding. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, plan to go to the high elevations where the water is cooler. Look for midday water temperatures in the 60’s. Most streams are flowing low. Do everything possible to hide from the trout. Dry flies and nymphs will work for you. Try a dry and dropper rig. Make your dropper a Green Weenie.
Fishing in the lowland rivers for warmwater species is fair. Fish the deeper runs and pools with a popper, foam floating fly, streamer, nymph or crayfish pattern.
The lakes will be crowded today. Go early to avoid the boat traffic and the sun. Fish the shaded banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and swimming nymphs.
Generation schedules at area dams are mixed. Some will have long pauses. Others will not. Generation will be heavier this afternoon at some dams. Tailwater anglers can work with most of the schedules. View the generation schedules on the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We were very busy at the shop yesterday. We will likely be busy today. I have a Hareline fly tying order waiting for me at the post office. I’ll pick that up and receive it. Then, I’ll continue to take an inventory in the tying department. This is the third inventory taken in the department this year.
Our inventory management system orders automatically at the push of a button, sort of. To order correctly, the inventory has to be right. The inventory has to be correct so customers do not buy goods that are out of stock. Inventory management is something we have to stay on top of.
