Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:28 am, the temperature is 69.6 degrees.
It is raining right now and it sounds very good hitting the roof of our house where I write this report every morning. We need it. We got about a tenth of an inch overnight. The rainfall is light now.
Todays high temperature will be in the upper 70’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely today. Rainfall may be heavy in thunderstorms, especially this morning. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature around 80 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 103 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.62 feet on the gauge. The river was rising earlier, but it has just peaked. Median flow for this date is 124 cfs. The water temperature is 69.6 degrees this morning.
Most if not all streams in the mountains are rising. Some have risen higher than normal.
The streams are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. There is a chance some streams may become stained today. Unless that happens, trout will be taking dry flies and nymphs. If there is some staining where you are fishing, nymphs will likely work best.
Stained water could be an issue in some lowland rivers. Otherwise, fishing for smallmouth bass and panfish will be fair to good. If the water is clear, try poppers or foam floating flies. Streamers, nymphs and crayfish patterns will work well too. If there is lightly stained water where you are fishing, sub-surface flies might work best. It should be overcast much of the day, which is beneficial.
This could be a very good lake fishing day due to the expected cloud cover. Wind should not be a problem unless you find yourself in a thunderstorm. Fish the banks with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers and swimming nymphs.
Watch for game fish feeding on shad, on the surface. Plankton ascends to the surface when the sun is off the water. Shad follow to feed on the plankton. Game fish follow the shad. If you see that occurring, tie on a Clouser Minnow or Puglisi threadfin shad and cast to where you see fish feeding on top. Overcast days are good top water and shallow water fishing days.
Generations schedules look good for the most part today. TVA and the Corps will be generating for longer periods this afternoon so tailwater anglers should plan to go early below most dams if you like fishing near the dams. Check the generation schedules and carefully plan your tailwater fishing day.
I think today will be a good fishing day wherever you go due to the cloud cover predicted at least early today. Hopefully it will be overcast all day. After tomorrow, there is a fair chance for thunderstorms every day this week. It will also be cooler this week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
