Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:05 am, the temperature is 63.1 degrees.
It will be sunny and warm today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s, with only a slight chance for thunderstorms. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 80’s and a higher chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon. Thunderstorms are likely Monday and it will be cooler.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.64 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 153 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing at about normal. Little River is flowing below normal. Little Pigeon River is flowing slightly higher than normal.
The water is warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. You should do fairly well using a dry/nymph dropper rig. Stealth is paramount to your success. Dress to blend with the forest so you are not a likely to be seen by the trout. A yellow sally stonefly or foam beetle is a good dry fly choice. A Green Weenie is an excellent choice for your dropper.
Most lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing will be fair today. It will be sunny, which is not a good condition. Winds will be light. Avoid the sun by going early and launching your boat a daybreak. Fish the dimly lit banks with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, find shaded banks to fish. When the sun is high and shaded banks are hard to find, I would call it a day.
Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today. Some generation schedules are very workable. TVA will begin generating at Norris Dam at 10 am this morning and continuing through the day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
