Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:05 am, the temperature is 67.6 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms moved through East Tennessee yesterday afternoon and overnight. Below are some rainfall totals that were reported at specific locations:
1.62 inches at the Knoxville Airport
.68 inches in Townsend
.74 inches in Dry Valley
None at Cades Cove
.12 inches in Gatlinburg
2.61 inches at Norris Dam
It will be sunny and hot today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. We have a good chance for afternoon thunderstorms. Expect high temperatures in the upper 80’s tomorrow and through the weekend. There is a greater chance for scattered thunderstorms each day. Some storms may move slowly, with a risk of localized flooding.
We will likely see rivers and creeks rise and recede over the next few days. Some streams may become temporarily stained. And, there is a chance for very high water in some areas through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 193 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 129 cfs. The water temperature is 69.1 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Many streams in the mountains are flowing higher than median flow but fishable this morning. Oconaluftee River and Cataloochee Creek at flowing right at normal. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. This is a good time to be using beetle patterns for your dry fly. Drop a Green Weenie or small bead head nymph off the beetle.
Many lowland rivers are flowing at good levels at least for now. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. Streamers, poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs and crayfish patterns should be in your fly boxes.
This may be a fair lake fishing day if you go early. It will be sunny much of the day. Winds will be light and variable out of the west at 5 to 10 miles per hour this afternoon. Launch at daybreak and fish the dimly lit banks and cover with streamers, poppers, foam floating flies and swimming nymphs. Move to shaded banks as the sun rises higher.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at some dams all day today or beginning later this morning or early afternoon. There are some generation schedules you can work with if you are hoping to do some tailwater fishing today. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
The rain we are getting is really helping keep the free flowing rivers in good shape for fishing. It looks like the rain in the form of scattered thunderstorms will continue through mid-August.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
