Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 69.8 degrees.
It will be hot and humid today with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Scattered thunderstorms are likely this afternoon and tonight.
It will be cooler tomorrow with a high in the low to middle 80’s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and through the night. Thursday will be cooler, with a high around 80 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms are likely, day and night.
Heavy rain is possible today through Thursday.
Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and cool, with highs in the low 80s. Low temperatures at night will drop to the low 60’s through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 235 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 118 cfs. The water temperature is 68.0 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at normal or higher than normal, but at good fishing levels. Streams may rise and fall over the next three days. Some may become temporarily stained. Right now, everything looks good. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs.
The lowland rivers are flowing near or higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass and other river species is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, nymphs, streamers or crayfish patterns. With thunderstorms likely today through Thursday, and the potential for heavy rain, some rivers may rise and become stained.
Lake fishing is fair. I would go early today. It will be partly sunny. Fish the dimly lit banks and cover with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or swimming nymphs. As the sun rises, seek shaded areas. Watch for thunderstorms, especially this afternoon.
TVA and the Corps will begin generating later this morning or early afternoon at most dams. TVA will be generating at Norris Dam all day, with one generator early this morning and two later. Tailwater anglers can work with many of the schedules by going early and choosing the right spot to be fishing. Or, if you are boating, you have many options for a float fishing day.
It looks like we are going to enjoy a beautiful weekend, with cooler temperatures and only a slight chance for rain. Hopefully, the streams will be at good fishing levels.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will enjoy cooler days and nights beginning Thursday and lasting through August 23.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
