Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 70.2 degrees.
It rained in some areas of the Smokies overnight but it appears to be over.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 80’s. It will be less humid than it has been recently. The low temperature tonight is predicted to be in the upper 50’s to 60 degrees.
Saturday will be sunny and cool, with a high in the low 80’s and a low in the low 60’s. Sunday will be sunny and a little warmer, with a high in the middle 80’s, a low in the middle 60’s and a slight chance for thunderstorms.
Little River is flowing at 323 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.33 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 132 cfs. The river is currently rising. The water temperature is 67.5 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at normal or somewhat higher than normal. Some streams are receding or just slowly rising. Those that have USGS gauge sites are flowing at fair to good fishing levels.
Many people are wondering if this will be a good weekend to be fishing in the mountains. I think it will. It will be cooler at night, so water temperatures will cool some as well. Stream flows should be good. Trout are actively feeding and taking dry flies and nymphs. This is going to be a beautiful weekend to be outside and fishing.
Most lowland rivers are flowing at good fishing levels for August. Some are flowing higher than normal. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is good. Poppers, foam floating flies, streamers, nymphs or crayfish patterns are all good fly choices.
This should be a good lake fishing day but I would go early. Though one weather forecast predicts partly cloudy skies, another thinks it will be mostly sunny. Launch early and fish the banks or cover and if the skies are clear, move to shaded areas to fish as the sun rises. The water may be a little choppy at times. Winds should be in the 5 to 10 miles per hour range.
Try poppers or foam floating flies. If they are not working, go deeper with streamers or swimming nymphs. The larger fish may be deeper.
TVA or the Corps will begin generating for the day later this morning or early afternoon. They will be pulsing at many dams earlier. If you plan to fish on a tailwater today, and you are wading, you should plan to go early and fish until the water rises. If you are boating, you can work with the schedules, especially if you know where and when to launch your boat. Check the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Traffic has been light in Townsend this week. That is typical in August. That may not be the case this weekend. The beautiful weather will draw people outside. We have not had beautiful weather in a while.

Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
