Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 66.5 degrees.
Today will be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon.
It will be sunny and warmer tomorrow, with a high temperature around 90 degrees. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible.
Little River is flowing at 87.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 105 cfs. The water temperature is 69.8 degrees this morning at the low elevation gauge site near Townsend.
Many streams in the mountains were affected by thunderstorms yesterday. Some streams rose quickly but they are all receding now and are at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are warm in the low elevations. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial fly patterns such as beetles, ants and inchworms are good choices. I would trail a Green Weenie behind a beetle dry fly. Weighted nymph rigs are also a good choice, especially if your dry fly is being pestered by minnows. Fish the broken and choppy water where the trout are hiding.
There are some lowland rivers that are flowing higher than normal this morning. Others are flowing close to normal, but normal is low in August. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Streamers and crayfish patterns will certainly work well. Poppers and foam floating flies will produce, especially in the shaded rivers. Fish the deeper pools and runs. Fish in the shaded areas if possible.
Fishing is fair on the lakes. The wind will be calm today, except in possible thunderstorms this afternoon. I would go early, at daybreak or late when the sun is low. Hit the dimly lit banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Try poppers or foam floating flies too. They might work.
TVA and the Corps will begin generating at most dams later this morning or early afternoon. Get there early and pick fishing spots where the water will be lower for a while if you are wading. If you are boating, you have more options. Visit the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
