Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 56.3 degrees.
The temperatures mentioned above is not a typo. It is really that cool. It will be warmer later. Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the upper 80’s. Tomorrow will be warm again, with a high in the upper 80’s and a low chance for thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
The weekend will be cooler with a higher chance for showers and thunderstorms. Look for highs in the upper 70’s to low 80’s. Rain chances remain fairly high on Labor Day with a high temperature in the upper 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 69.2 cubic feet per second or 1.45 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 93 cfs. The water temperature is 68.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Some are flowing close to normal. Normal is low right now. Water temperatures are plunging this morning, but will warm later today and continue to be warm tomorrow.
Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler. Look for temperatures in the 60’s during the warmest part of the day. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Terrestrial fly patterns are good choices. A beetle dry fly with an inchworm dropper is a good combination.
Lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass is fair to good. Fish in the deeper pools and runs with poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or crayfish patterns. Fish the shaded areas if they are available in the river you are fishing. I would go early or late.
I have not heard any good lake fishing news from customers in the shop. It will be sunny today so fishing will be best with fly tackle early or late. Fish the shaded or dimly lit banks and cover when the sun is low. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will probably work best.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers will be generating today, as usual. They will begin either early this morning early afternoon at most dams. The turbines will be running day and night at Norris and Wolf Creek dams. Visit the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
I have the long term weather forecast pulled up on my computer and what I see is promising. It will be cooler through September 15th with highs in the low 80’s and lows in the middle to low 60’s. Rain chances look good most days. Fall officially begins Thursday, September 22nd.
Hopefully we will enjoy higher stream flows and cooler water in the near future.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
