Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 69.8 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature near 80 degrees. We have a low chance for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 80’s and a low chance for showers in the afternoon. Rain will return to the forecast Friday night and each day through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 98 cfs. The water temperature is 68.9 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at normal or higher than normal. Cataloochee Creek is rising this morning but the stream level is still close to normal.
This should be a good fishing day due to overcast skies and higher water levels than we have had lately. The streams are warm in the low elevations this morning. Fish in the higher elevations where the water is cooler.
Trout will take dry flies or nymphs. A dry and nymph dropper combination is a good choice. Flies that imitate terrestrial insects, including beetles, ants and inchworms are excellent choices right now.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good in the free flowing rivers. Most lowland rivers are flowing at or higher than normal. Normal in early September is low. Fish the deeper pools and runs using poppers, foam floating flies, streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing is fair using fly tackle in shallow water. It will be overcast today which is a good condition. Hit the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your flies get down deep by stopping occasionally, then slowing continuing your retrieve. You might catch bass and panfish on poppers or foam floating flies. Give that a try. I think you will do best using sub-surface flies.
There are breaks in the generation planned at several dams early today, giving tailwater anglers some fishing opportunities. The generators will be off at Wilbur Dam all day. They will be generating at Wolf Creek Dam all day and through the night. Refer to the TVA website generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
Now that the summer pleasure boating season is over, TVA and the Corps will be lowering the lakes to provide more water storage capacity, so we should see more generation in the coming months.
The long term weather forecast looks great next week, with Fall-like temperatures during the day and especially at night. High temperatures in the upper 70’s to low 80’ are predicted beginning Monday September 12th through September 21st. More importantly, the nights should be much cooler with lows in the upper 50’s to low 60’s. The streams will be cooler. Fishing in the low elevations will be much better.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
