Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 63.1 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the low 80’s. There is no rain in the forecast today, but there is a slight chance tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny again with a low chance for showers in the afternoon. Rain will move into the area overnight and remain every day through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 164 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 85 cfs. The water temperature is 66.5 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing fairly high at the Sevierville Gauge. Flow is currently 1,420 cubic feet per second or 3.19 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 141 cfs.
Other streams in the Smokies that have USGS gauge sites are flowing a little higher than normal. Normal in early September is low. There may be other streams that are flowing high today but they should recede to good fishing levels later.
Water temperatures in the mountain streams will gradually become cooler this weekend and fishing will improve in the lower elevations, unless we get too much rain. Heavy rain is NOT mentioned in the forecasts I read this morning. This may be a very good weekend to be fishing in the mountains.
Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. A dry and dropper or a weighted nymph rig are both good options.
Lowland rivers exiting the mountains and flowing through the valleys are flowing at or higher than normal. Little Pigeon River is flowing fairly high. Fishing for smallmouth bass, rock bass and panfish is fair to good. Try streamers, nymphs, poppers, foam floating flies or crayfish patterns.
Fly fishing on the lakes is fair. There may be a little chop on the water today as winds are predicted to be between 5 and 10 miles per hour. It should be partly cloudy which is beneficial. Hit the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your weighted flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly. If the sun is off the water, try poppers or foam floating flies. They may work for you too.
TVA and the Corps is offering tailwater anglers some windows of opportunity. The generation schedules vary greatly today. Refer to the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today.
Daniel and I are meeting with Chase, a new sales representative in our region. He represents Umpqua, Echo, Lamson and other companies. We have both communicated with Chase by phone and email but neither of us have met him. I am looking forward to the meeting. We will be submitting orders that will be delivered next Spring. We buy a lot of Umpqua products, including flies, fly tying hooks, leaders, tippet and stream side accessories.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
