Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 56 degrees.
Today and tomorrow will be sunny with highs in the middle to upper 80’s and lows in the low to middle 60’s. Wednesday will be hot. The high temperature is predicted to be in the low 90’s. Cooler temperatures will arrive beginning Thursday and lasting through the weekend. There is a chance for rain Thursday.
Little River is flowing at 69.2 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.45 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 71 cfs. The water temperature is 62.8 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are slowly receding. Most are flowing near normal, some slightly higher and others a little lower. Normal flows in September are low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range but we will see warming water as the week progresses before cooling later this week.
Fish the broken water where the trout are hiding. Nymphs and dry flies will produce for you. Try a dry fly with a nymph dropper or fish with weighted nymph rigs. Flies that mimic terrestrial insects are good choices. Stealth is essential to your success during this time of low flow. Dress to blend with the forest and stay low.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species in the lowland rivers is fair. Fish the deep pools with streamers and crayfish patterns. Poppers and foam floating flies might work in shaded areas. I would give them a try.
Fishing on the lakes with fly gear is fair at best. Larger gamefish will be holding deep. Weighted streamers and swimming nymphs will probably work best. Go early or late when the sun is low. Cast to the banks and cover. Allow your flies to descend deep using a slow retrieve.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at many dams. Tailwater fishing options are slim today but there are some, especially if you go early and choose the right location to wade or launch your boat.
September continues to be a busy month at the shop. September is usually slow. So far, we are way up from the same period compared to all of the last three years. I’m not sure why but I do know the store is very well stocked.
This is my weekly order day for fly tying materials and tools. Everything I order today will arrive by Thursday or Friday. Then, I will order again next Monday.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
