Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 60 degrees.
It is going to be hot today with a high temperature around 90 degrees, falling to the middle to upper 60’s tonight. Tomorrow will be cooler with a chance for afternoon showers. Expect a high tomorrow in the low to middle 80’s, dropping to the low 50’s at night. It will be cooler Friday and through the weekend with a chance for showers Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 60.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.40 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 66.0 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing at or below normal. Water temperatures have warmed in the lower elevations and will remain warm through tomorrow. Fish in the middle to high elevations where the water is cooler. Look for water temperatures in the middle 60’s or cooler during the warmest time of the day.
Trout are hiding in the broken water or near cover. Fish pockets, plunge pools and deeper runs. Dry flies and nymphs will work. Do everything possible to stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair. The lowland rivers are flowing low. Fish in the deeper pools and runs. Streamers and crayfish patterns are good fly choices. Poppers and foam floating flies may produce, especially in the shaded areas.
Lake fishing will be best early or late when the sun is low. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will work better than top water flies, especially for larger fish. Let your flies drop deep and retrieve slow.
Tailwater fishing options are slim today due to excessive generation at many dams. There are some exceptions but TVA and the Corps will begin generating this morning, some early and at others a little later. Check the TVA website to see what your tailwater fishing options are today and plan accordingly.
Get ready for cooler Fall temperatures next week. We will feel lows in the 40’s some nights. That will be a nice change.
