Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 61 degrees.
Today will be cool, with a high temperature in the upper 70’s, dropping to the upper 40’s tonight. Rain showers will move into the area this morning and is expected to become a steady rain this afternoon. Tomorrow will be sunny and cool with a high in the middle 70’s and a low at night in the low to middle 50’s. It will be partly cloudy this weekend, warmer Saturday and cooler Sunday. We have a chance for rain again Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 53.5 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.38 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 80 cfs. The water temperature is 66.2 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains have now receded to below normal. Normal in September is low. Water temperatures will become cooler tonight and through the weekend. With the current low water flows, you should be fishing the broken water where the trout are hiding. Trout are taking dry flies and nymphs. Stealth is extremely important to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
The lowland rivers are flowing low today. Fishing for smallmouth bass and warmwater species is fair. Fish in the deep pools using streamers or crayfish patterns. Try poppers or foam floating flies. They may work, especially in shaded areas in the rivers.
Fishing on the lakes is fair. It should be overcast later today and it may be breezy. Winds could gust as high as 25 miles per hour this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. I would launch early today and fish the dimly lit banks and cover. Weighted streamers or swimming nymphs will probably work best.
There will be long periods of generation at most dams today beginning early, and offering very few tailwater fishing options for anglers who are wading. Check the TVA website and you may be able to figure out a tailwater fishing plan, especially early today.
Park Burson from Orvis will be meeting with some of us this morning. We always look forward to spending time with Park. We have been working with him for almost 27 years. He was very young when he started working in the fly fishing industry. He represents Orvis and Scientific Anglers, which is owned by Orvis.
Daniel and Dave Carson will be placing next year’s pre-season orders with both companies after the meeting today.
I hope we get some rain soon. It looks like water temperatures will be cool at least through October 6th. Rain and cooler water will improve Fall fishing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
