Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy this morning then overcast this afternoon. Today’s high temperature will be in the middle to upper 60’s, falling to around 50 degrees tonight. It will rain tonight.
Rain will continue to fall tomorrow. High temperature will be in the upper 50’s with a low tomorrow night around 50 degrees. Expect occasional rain showers tomorrow night.
Sunday will be cloudy, with occasional rain showers and a high around 60 degrees. Showers will continue through the evening.
Little River is flowing at 38.2 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 87 cfs. The water temperature is 54.9 degrees this morning.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, expect low water conditions. Fish in the larger rivers in the low elevations. Water temperatures will be fine in the low elevations. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice but dry flies may produce as well.
The lowland rivers are flowing low. Fishing for smallmouth bass and warmwater species is fair. Fish in the deep pools using streamers and crayfish patterns. Try poppers or foam floating flies. They might work.
You may do well in some rivers that are stocked with trout. Nymphs and streamers will probably work best.
This would be a pretty good lake fishing day due to the overcast skies expected later. The problem will be wind which is predicted to blow from the northeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour with gusts as high as 20 miles per hour. The wind would keep me off the lakes today. If you go, hit the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Let your flies sink deep and retrieve slowly.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at several dams. There are pauses in the generation scheduled at some. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
What we have now are certainly not ideal fishing conditions. What we need is rain. We will get some this weekend and that will hopefully help. The US Drought Monitor was updated yesterday. East Blount County is abnormally dry, including some counties to our south.
The long term weather forecast predicts cool temperatures through October 14th. The chance for rain through the period appears low now, after this weekend. That could change and hopefully it will.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
