Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 54 degrees.
It will be cloudy this morning but become sunny later. The high temperature today will be around 70 degrees, falling to the low to middle 40’s tonight. Tomorrow through Thursday will be sunny with highs in the 70’s and lows in the low 40’s to 50 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 58.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.41 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 76 cfs. The water temperature is 55.8 degrees at the low elevation USGS gauge stie near Townsend.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal, which is low. Water temperatures are very good in the low to middle elevations.
I would fish in the larger rivers in the low elevations where flows are higher. Weighted nymph rigs are a good choice but dry flies may work too. Stealth is paramount to your success. Stay hidden from the trout and you will catch more.
Most if not all rivers flowing out of the mountains are at low levels. Fishing for stocked trout is fair to good as the water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range. Try streamers, egg patterns, squirmy worms and nymphs.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other species is fair in the lowland rivers. Fish the deep pools with streamers or crayfish patterns.
Lake fishing with fly tackle is fair. Hit the banks and cover with weighted steamers or swimming nymphs. The larger fish will likely be holding deep. Allow your flies to sink deeper and retrieve slowly to keep them down.
There are pauses in the generation scheduled today at some dams. Tailwater anglers have a few options. Refer to the generation schedules on the TVA website to plan your tailwater fishing day.
I was off from work yesterday but I checked our store sales activity often, remotely. We were very busy at the shop. I will be ordering and receiving fly tying materials and tools today and helping customers in the fly tying department. Mondays are usually slow in the Fall, but not lately. We had the best September I can remember. I didn’t compare to years before 2019, but I suspect this was the best September we have had.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
