Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature is 41 degrees.
It will be sunny and dry during the remaining days this week and through the holiday weekend. Today and tomorrow will be warm with highs in the middle 70’s. The low temperature tonight will be in the low 50’s. Cooler air will move in Friday night. Expect high temperatures in the middle to upper 60’s this weekend with lows in the 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 51.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.31 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 72 cfs. The water temperature is 53.1 degrees this morning.
All streams in the area are flowing low, in the mountains and the lowland rivers. If you plan to fish in the Smokies this week, I would choose a low elevation larger river. Water temperatures are good in these elevations. Weighted nymph rigs remain a good choice. Fishing without a strike indicator is a good tactic, so you can vary the depth of your nymphs as needed. You may catch trout on dry flies too.
Fishing for trout in the rivers that are stocked is good thanks to the cooler water temperatures. Higher flows would be better but we may not see that happen for a while. Rain is not in the forecast until next week. Streamers, nymphs, egg patterns or squirmy worms are excellent fly choices in the stocked streams.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is fair to good. Streamers or crayfish patterns are probably your best fly choices. You could try poppers or foam floating flies. They might work, especially in the shaded areas. Fish in the deeper pools. Again, fishing would be better if we had higher flows.
Fishing on the lakes with fly fishing gear will be best early or late when the sun is low. Fish deep using weighted streamers and swimming nymphs. Allow your flies to sink and retrieve slow so they stay deep. I would use baitfish patterns, heavily weighted Wooly Buggers and weighted damsel fly imitations.
Favorable flows on the tailwaters are limited today. You may be able to work with some generation schedules if you are at the right place at the right time. Check the TVA websites to see which tailwater generation schedules may work for you and plan carefully.
Leaves are beginning to turn in the lower elevations. I talked to some customers from Kentucky yesterday who said we are about two weeks behind them. But, we are seeing more visitors in town enjoying the cooler Fall weather. What we have now is ideal camping weather. We will see more visitors later this month, probably next week.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
