Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 44 degrees.
It will be sunny and breezy today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 70’s dropping to the middle 50’s tonight. Wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour are predicted today. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the middle 70’s with a chance for showers in the afternoon. Showers are likely Sunday night.
Little River is flowing at 39.6 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.23 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 90 cfs. The water temperature is 53.4 degrees at the gauge site near Townsend.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing low. Most trout will be hiding in the areas of the streams where there is broken choppy water. Brown trout may be spotted in the pools, preparing to spawn. Nymphs will work for sure and dry flies may produce as well.
Stealth is essential to your success. Don’t let the trout see you and you will catch more. Dress to blend with the forest. Use light tippets and smaller flies. You may need to cast further than usual due to the low water conditions.
Fishing for stocked trout in the streams flowing out of the mountains is fair. Stocked trout will likely be in the deeper pools. Small nymphs, midge pupa, small streamers, egg patterns, Green Weenies and squirmy worms are good fly choices.
The lowland rivers are flowing very low. Smallmouth bass and rock bass can be caught in the deeper pools and runs. Streamers and crayfish patterns will probably work best for you.
Wind may be an issue when fishing on the lakes today. Sometimes breezy conditions are predicted and don’t occur. I guess you could take your chances and go. Fish the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs.
There are not a lot of tailwater fishing choices today, especially if you are wading. Check the predicted flows at Center Hill, Norris and South Holston dams. Those tailwaters may offer some angler friendly flows for a while today. South Holston looks to be a good option. Check the TVA website before you go and plan accordingly.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is crowded with people enjoying the Fall colors. There are a lot of visitors in Townsend and other gateway towns. I talked to some people from Alabama yesterday, who are here for the football game with Tennessee. Some will be fishing while they are here.
I hope we get the predicted rain tomorrow night. The chance is high and a quarter of an inch is expected. We need rain!
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
