Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 29 degrees.
A warming trend that will last for several days begins today. It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the low 40’s. Tomorrow and Sunday will be sunny, with highs in the low 70’s and lows in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 45.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 83 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees this morning.
All streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are chilly at all elevations.
If you are planning to fish in the Smokies today, wait a while to give the streams time to warm. Under these low water conditions, stealth is essential to your success. Dress to blend with the forest. Cast further to avoid being seen by the trout. Fish the broken choppy water where the trout are hiding. Use light tippet and smaller flies. Nymphs will probably work best today.
Stocked trout in the rivers flowing out of the mountains will be found in the deeper pools. They may be sluggish this morning. Go later when the water is warmer. Nymphs, midge pupa, egg patterns and squirmy worms are good fly choices when fishing for stocked trout.
Fishing for smallmouth bass will be best later today when the water is warmer. Streamers, hellgrammite patterns and crayfish imitations are good fly choices.
Fishing on the lakes will be best early or late when the sun is low. I would choose late today because it is cold. Dress warm. Winds will be calm today and out of the west. Cast to the banks and cover with weighted streamers or swimming nymphs. Allow your flies to sink deep and retrieve slowly.
TVA and the Corps will be generating for long periods today at many dams. You might be able to work with the schedules planned at Center Hill and South Holston dams. There may be more. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater options are available for you today. If you are boating or fishing with a guide, there are more opportunities. Guides know how to plan for good fishing days on the tailwaters when flows are not ideal for many of us.
We are still very busy at the shop. This has been an incredible late Summer and Fall. The store is stocked well. We are running on all cylinders. We are anticipating and buying for a big year in 2023.
Dave Carson is lining up fly tyers for the off-season Free Saturday Fly Tying Demonstrations. We are all glad to see the Saturday demonstrations coming back and I know you are too.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
