Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 50 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the upper 60’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. It will be sunny tomorrow with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle to upper 40’s. Friday will be sunny and warmer. There is a chance for showers Saturday and Sunday, though the chance is low for now.
Little River is flowing at 72.7 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 130 cfs. The water temperature is 56.1 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations so they will be actively feeding. Due to the low water conditions, the trout will be hiding in broken water or cover. Brown trout may be spotted in the open in pools. Dry flies, nymphs or a dry fly with a weighted nymph dropper are all good fly choices. Stay hidden from the trout and use light tippet.
Stocked trout will be holding in the deeper pools and runs in the free flowing rivers exiting the mountains. Nymphs will likely work best. You may want to try small nymphs or midge pupa fished under a strike indicator. Vary the distance between your nymph and the indicator as needed. Weighted nymph rigs fished without an indicator may work as well or better.
Smallmouth bass fishing in the lowland rivers is fair or maybe better than that. Nymphs and streamers should work. Fish in the deeper pools and runs.
This will be a good lake fishing day due to the expected cloudy skies. Winds will be calm early then increasing to about 5 miles per hour this afternoon. Cast to the banks and cover with weighted streamers, fished deep and slow.
There are breaks in the generation planned at a few dams today giving tailwater anglers at least some options. Check the generation schedules on the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have.
The Fall tourist season in the Smokies is winding down. There is less traffic in Townsend. I went to lunch with an old friend of mine yesterday. We found that some restaurants have cut back to Winter hours or closed for the season. Other restaurants are open. Business at the shop has been slow during the past three days. This is normal in early November.
What seems abnormal to me is, November is starting out very warm. Freezing temperatures at night are not in the long term forecast through November 16th. November is normally a fairly wet month. Hopefully we will have normal rainfall this month.
Mike Adams will be tying at the shop Saturday between 10 am and 2 pm. This is the first Free Fly Tying Demonstration this year. Mike is an excellent fly tyer and demonstrator. He is a retired professional guide, who spent his career fishing on the Watauga River and other tailwaters. All you have to do is show up and enjoy watching and talking to Mike.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
