Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 59 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature in the middle 70’s and a low tonight in the low 50’s. We have a 40% chance for rain today. Tomorrow will be warm with a high in the middle 70’s dropping to the middle to upper 40’s overnight. The week will gradually cool. Expect highs this weekend in the 40’s and 50’s with lows in the 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 57.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 134 cfs. Last year, flow at the Little River gauge was 117 cfs. The water temperature is a very warm 60.3 degrees. Last year on this date, the temperature was 45.7 degrees.
All streams in the Smokies are flowing low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations. Trout are actively feeding. Most trout will be found in the broken water or near cover. Brown trout may be spotted in the open, in pools, spawning or preparing to spawn.
Nymphs will work for sure. Dry flies might work too. Stay hidden from the trout. Use light tippet. Make longer than usual casts to avoid detection.
Fishing in the lower elevation streams stocked with trout is fair to good. Trout will be holding in the deeper pools. Nymphs will work best. You may want to use smaller nymphs or midge pupa. Use light tippet.
Smallmouth bass will be active in the lowland rivers due to the warm water temperatures. However, the rivers are flowing low, which offer less than normal areas to fish. The bass will be cruising in the deep pools. Nymphs or other sub-surface flies will probably work best.
It is supposed to be overcast today which is a good lake fishing condition. Winds are predicted to be light and variable. Cast to the banks or cover with weighted streamers, retrieved deep and slow to catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and other species.
I checked the generation schedules at several dams this morning. There are some tailwater wade fishing opportunities today and more if you are boating. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
The dry conditions and drought have moved east. Some areas in Tennessee are abnormally dry, while other areas are listed as being in a drought. Areas along the mountains in Blount and Sevier County are deemed to be in a moderate drought. Townsend is located in Blount County. The US Drought Monitor was updated last Thursday.
