Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the low 70’s. Showers are likely overnight and it will be warmer. It may be windy in the mountains tonight and continue through tomorrow. Rain and possibly thunderstorms are predicted for tomorrow. Rain may be heavy. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches are possible. There is a chance for showers tomorrow night and Saturday.
Little River is flowing at 57.1 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 156 cfs. The water temperature is 53.1 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very low though that will likely change by the weekend. Water temperatures are falling this morning. Fishing for trout in the Smokies is fair. If you go today, wait a while until the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. You may want to fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Stay hidden from the trout. Dress to blend with the forest, use light tippet and smaller flies. Most trout have been caught on nymphs lately, according to customers I have talked to in the shop. Using a dry fly with a weighted nymph dropper is a good tactic. That allows you to make longer casts to avoid detection.
Nymphs will probably work best in the rivers and streams that are stocked with trout. The fish will be holding in the deeper pools and runs. Use light tippet and small weighted nymphs. You may do best using a strike indicator and adjust the depth as needed.
Fishing in the lowland rivers for smallmouth bass will be best later today when the water is warming. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best for you. Fish in the deeper pools and runs.
There should be cloud cover today which is a good lake fishing condition, when using fly fishing tackle. Winds are predicted to be out of the northeast at around 5 miles per hour. Cast to the banks and cover with weighted streamers and retrieve slow with intermittent pauses to keep your fly deep. I would use a large heavily weighted Wooly Bugger or shad pattern, and hope to catch bass or other species.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at many dams today with only short pauses. Tailwater fishing options are limited today. If you are boating, you may have more options. Check the TVA website from the links below to see if you can work with the predicted flows on your favorite tailwaters.
It is very dry and we need the expected rain arriving tonight. Heavy rain may raise the rivers too high to fish temporarily this weekend. Or, that may not happen.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
