Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:36 am, the temperature is 18.5 degrees.
After days of cold temperatures way below normal, it is finally going to warm somewhat. Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 50’s, falling to around 30 degrees tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle to upper 50’s and a low overnight in the middle 30’s. Wednesday will be even warmer, with a high around 60 degrees. The high temperature on Thanksgiving day will be in the low 60’s. Showers a likely Thursday night.
Little River is flowing at 107 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.60 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 167 cfs. Last year on this date, Little River was flowing at 83.8 cfs in the morning when I wrote the fishing report.
The water temperature at the USGS gauge site in Townsend is 36.1 degrees which is the coldest it has been on this date during the past 15 years. Median temperature on this date is 45.3 degrees. Last year, the water temperature was 43.9 degrees at the time this report was written.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal for this date. The streams are very cold and clear. Water temperatures are way below the trout’s preferred range. Most trout will be lethargic and difficult to catch. We will see some warming over the next few days so fishing will improve.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow today due to the cold water temperatures. Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating for long periods at many dams today. There are breaks in the generation planned at a few this afternoon. Look at the schedule for Norris Dam. That may be a possibility for tailwater anglers in our area later today. I don’t check the schedules at every dam so refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater options you have.
It is going to be warmer and wetter through the end of November. We have a good chance for rain Thursday night and through the coming weekend. Temperatures will be close to normal or warmer through the end of November and into early December.
That is good news, though the long term forecast are subject to change.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
