Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:35 am, the temperature is 23 degrees.
We had a power outage in the area around our home after I started working on the fishing report. I’ve been sitting around waiting, with candle light and flashlights.
Warmer temperatures are on the way. It will be mostly sunny today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 50’s, falling to the middle 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the upper 30’s.
Thanksgiving day will be mostly sunny and warmer with a slight chance for showers in the afternoon. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s with a low overnight in the low to middle 40’s. We can expect rain Thursday night, Friday, Friday night and Saturday. Sunday will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 50’s and a chance for rain in the morning.
Little River is flowing at 100 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.57 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 201 cfs. The water temperature is 36.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing low again. That will probably change later this week. Water temperatures are well below the trout’s preferred range. Fishing will be slow until the water warms.
If you go fishing today, wait a while until the water becomes warmer. I would go later this afternoon. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. The water is very clear. The trout are spooky. Dress to blend with the forest to avoid being seen by the trout. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best. Use light tippet. You may do best using small nymphs.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations will be slow until the water warms. Again, wait until later today to go. Fishing will improve as the week progresses. Weighted nymphs will work best for you. You might try streamers too.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass will be slow today in the lowland rivers due to the cold water conditions. We may see some improvement in these rivers later this week.
There are pauses in the generation schedules today at several dams, mostly during the late morning to afternoon hours. With careful planning, tailwater anglers have some options today, whether you are wading or boating. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have.
There are many out of town visitors in Townsend for the holiday. We saw a lot of school age kids in the shop yesterday. We will be closed Thanksgiving Day and I will not be writing a fishing report. The shop will re-open Friday and we will be open all weekend.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
