Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:41 am, the temperature is 37 degrees.
Today will be sunny and beautiful, with a high temperature in the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the upper 40’s. Showers and possibly thunderstorms are likely tonight. Showers and thunderstorms are also likely tomorrow morning. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the middle 60’s with a low in the low 40’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 83.8 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.49 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 194 cfs. The water temperature is 45.5 degrees.
All streams in the mountains that have USGS gauge sites are flowing lower than median flow. The streams warmed some yesterday and that trend will continue through tomorrow.
As the streams warm, fishing for trout in the mountains will improve. Fishing will likely be best later today when the streams are warmer. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you. Use light tippet and stay hidden from the trout.
The same is true in the lowland rivers flowing out of the Smokies where trout are stocked. The trout may be sluggish this morning but fishing will improve later today and tomorrow as the rivers warm. Weighted nymphs are good fly choices for the stocked trout. If fishing is slow, downsize your nymphs and use light tippet.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers may get better today and tomorrow due to the warmer water temperatures. Fishing for smallies would be much better if the water was warmer. Try nymphs or streamers if you go.
There are not many tailwater fishing options today but you might be able to work with some of the schedules, especially if you are boating. If you are wading, there are not many. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what you think.
I heard Dave Whitlock passed away yesterday and I confirmed it online this morning. He was 87 years old. He was one of the most influential fly fishing writers of our time. He was also an incredible artist and illustrator. His fishing illustrations graced many books and magazine articles, either written by him or other authors. I was fortunate to have sat across the dinner table from him on his birthday years ago. Dave was a very nice and humble man. Much will be written about Dave in the coming days.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.

FREE FLY TYING DEMONSTRATIONS HELD ON SATURDAYS
For the first time since 2019, we will be holding our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays. The demonstrations will begin at 10 am and last until 2 pm. You do not need a reservation. Just show up and enjoy. These demonstrations will kick off November 5th, and last through mid-December. Then, they will resume in January.
Saturday December 3rd - Jimmy Jones will be demonstrating today. Jimmy lives in Maryville. He is an avid Smokies angler and golfer. He ties some very interesting and unique flies that work very well in the Smokies.
I have learned new techniques, watching Jimmy tie.
Saturday December 10th - Jonathan Yeager - Jonathan is also known as the "Fly Doctor". He is a professor at UT Chatanooga. He ties flies commercially and sells them to his customers. He is an avid fly fisherman who spends his fishing time on wild trout streams in the Appalachians and stocked tailwaters.
