Little River is flowing at 876 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.13 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 231 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees this morning.
Little Pigeon River is flowing at 1,330 cfs, 3.11 feet, compared to median flow of 366 cfs.
Oconaluftee River is flowing at 1,010 cfs or 2.62 feet which compares to median flow of 432 cfs for this date.
Tellico River is flowing at 600 cfs or 2.19 feet, compared to median flow of 196 cfs.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 184 cfs or 2.94 feet, compared to median flow of 85 cfs for this date.
As you can see from the sampling above, most streams in the mountains are flowing at high levels, considerably higher than normal. The streams are slowly receding. The ground is saturated so the streams will continue to recede slowly.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, be careful. The streams are swift. You may find some smaller streams that run off quicker than others. They would be a good choice. Or, stand in safe water while casting weighted nymph rigs or streamers. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range so the fish will be active.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation streams outside the Park will be fair, but you will need to pick good spots to stand. Cast weighted nymph rigs or streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be difficult due to the high water conditions. Weighted nymphs and streamers will work best for you.
TVA and the Corps will be generating most of the day at most dams. I did not look at every schedule, so check the TVA website to see if you can find suitable flows to fish on your favorite tailwater.
