Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 37 degrees.
Today will be sunny today with a high temperature in the upper 50’s, falling to the low 40’s tonight. It will rain tomorrow and tomorrow night. It will also be windy, day and night. The high temperature tomorrow will be in the upper 50’s with a low in the upper 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 352 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.40 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 259 cfs. The water temperature is 48.2 degrees this morning and falling.
Streams in the mountains have receded and many are very close to normal. They are at good fishing levels. Water temperatures have fallen to below the trout’s preferred range.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait until later, giving the water temperatures time to bottom out and begin to warm. Trout will be sluggish early but more active later. Weighted nymphs or streamers are good fly options.
Fishing for stocked trout will be better later today. Nymphs or streamers will work best for you.
I think fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow today. The water is colder than the bass prefer. If you decide to go, use nymphs or streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at most dams offering wade fishing tailwater anglers few to no options. I do not look at the schedules at every dam when I write this report, so check the TVA website from the links below and you may find a suitable generation schedule at your favorite tailwater.
Effective March 1, 2023, you will need to have purchased a parking pass or tag to park your vehicle in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. As far as I know, all the specifics have not been finalized. We have a few months, but we need to start thinking about this and how to buy a tag. CLICK HERE to read some information on the GSMNP web page.
These tags can be purchased online but I don’t see a link on the page to buy one. They can also be bought in the Park. You can buy a daily tag for $5, weekly $15 or annual for $40. The tags will be specific to one vehicle. They can’t be transferred to another vehicle.
You will not need a tag to drive through the Park, which many people do. It is not an entry fee. You will need the tag if you park your vehicle for 15 minutes or longer.
More information will be forthcoming. I think a lot of visitors will show up this Spring, and know nothing about this new fee. We will have a lot of explaining to do at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
