Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:50 am, the temperature is 20 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature in the middle 40’s, falling to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the middle to upper 40’s and a low around 30 degrees. Rain is likely Wednesday night and Thursday. Snow is in the forecast for Friday. The temperature Friday night may drop to 5 degrees. Christmas weekend is predicted to be sunny and cold.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 238 cfs. The water temperature is 38.8 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies have receded to near normal for this date. Water temperatures are cold, well below the trout’s preferred range. Fishing in the Smokies is slow. If you go, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or nymph rigs.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow today due to the cold water temperatures. If you decide to give it a try, stand in safe water and drift weighted nymphs or midges through the deeper water. Trout will be holding near the bottom and will most likely lethargic.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is slow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at every dam I checked this morning, all day. Visit the TVA website to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater. I do not check every one each morning.
As of 4:00 pm Saturday, the body of the man who fell from his kayak in Little River on Friday, was not found. His body may have been recovered yesterday but I did not see any updates on the local news websites. The accident evidently occurred below a small waterfall in a deep pool located upstream from The Sinks.
Search teams from the Townsend Fire Department, Blount County and the National Park are involved in the recovery efforts.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
