Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 10 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance for snow showers and a high temperature in the low 30’s. Tonight will be warmer than it has been recently, dropping to the low 20’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 40’s and a low in the low to middle 20’s.
It will gradually become much warmer this week. We will enjoy highs in the 60’s this weekend.
Little River is flowing at 196 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.0 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 307 cfs. The water temperature is 32 degrees or colder.
Some streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal while others are flowing lower. Water temperatures are very cold. Trout will be inactive today. Fishing will be slow. If you go fishing in the mountains, stay close to your vehicle and have a change of dry clothes in case you get wet. I would use weighted nymphs rigs if I went, which I would not do.
We will see water temperatures warm this week. Fishing will improve, especially by next weekend.
Fishing for stocked trout will likely be slow today but fishing will improve as the week progresses. If you go, weighted nymphs are your best fly choices.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow today.
TVA and the Corps are generating as much as they can to produce electricity which is in high demand. Check the TVA website to see if you can find suitable flows on the area tailwaters. I saw only a couple of short breaks at the dams I viewed this morning.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) called for emergency load reductions this weekend to reduce the stain on the power grid. We experienced power outages due to “rolling blackouts”. The power outages lasted between 15 minutes and 45 minutes. I read this morning, this is the first time this has happened in the 89 year history of the Tennessee Valley Authority. I also read power demand was 35% higher than they expected.
We were open on Christmas Eve for three hours. Our internet was down and we had no phone service. We had no power at one point during the morning.
Hopefully everything will be back to normal today.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
