Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 26 degrees.
Light snow fell overnight. It looks like we got about a half of an inch. It will melt soon. Today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low to middle 40’s, dropping to the middle 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low around 30 degrees.
Some roads may be slick this morning, but that won’t last long.
Many roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed due to snow and ice. Little River Road from Sugarlands to Townsend is closed. Laurel Creek Road and Newfound Gap Road are closed. You won’t be able to drive to Cades Cove until Laurel Creek Road reopens.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.87 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 286 cfs. The water temperature is 32 degrees or colder.
Fishing in the Smokies will be slow due to the cold water conditions.
Fishing will gradually improve this week as the streams begin to warm. That will take time as snow and ice will be melting into the rivers. We will enjoy high temperatures in the low 60’s with lows in the 40’s by the weekend. We should get some warm rain Saturday.
Fishing for stocked trout will be slow today. Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers will be slow.
TVA and the Corps will be generating at most dams all day. There are not many tailwater fishing opportunities unless you will be boating. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
We were busy at the shop yesterday. We sold the heck out of fly tying materials. I can’t remember when we have sold that much in one day. A lot of anglers are tying flies right now.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
