Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:53 am, the temperature is 26 degrees.
Today is going to be sunny and warm with a high temperature in the low 60’s, falling to the middle to upper 30’s overnight. Tomorrow will be sunny and warm again, with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the low to middle 40’s.
Rain will move in Friday night and remain through Saturday. Warm air will remain as well. Expect highs in the 60’s with lows in the 40’s Saturday and Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 129 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.75 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 317 cfs. The water temperature is 32.9 degrees.
Fishing will improve when the water temperatures rise into the 40’s. Fishing will be much better when the water temperature rises into the upper 40’s. Water warming will be gradual, despite the warm air. There is ice and snow in the mountains to be melted first. I am anxious to see what these numbers look like every morning through the weekend.
Some roads in the National Park are still closed this morning, including Little River Road and Newfound Gap Road. Laurel Creek Road reopened yesterday, giving people the opportunity to visit Cades Cove. More roads should reopen today.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. That may change tomorrow night and Saturday. Right now, water temperatures are very cold. Trout are lethargic. Fishing is slow.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations will be slow until the water warms.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day at many of their dams. I did notice breaks in the generation at Center Hill and Dale Hollow dams. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
We have been very busy at the shop. December has been an extraordinary month for us, much better than usual. I heard comments from customers yesterday about how many people are visiting Townsend. It seems unusual to me. I think a lot of local people have “Cabin Fever” and are glad to be out enjoying the warmer temperatures and sunshine.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
